This begins early on in the first paragraph, when the narrator is reeling from the news of Sonny ’s arrest, his face is trapped in the darkness which roared outside. It is said to depict the eye of the severed head of Medusa in the constellation of Perseus (opens in new tab)- although gazing up at this particular star won’t turn you to stone. Throughout the story, Baldwin uses imagery of darkness to signal the dangers and traumas of growing up black in Harlem. When the stars were later given names by al-Sufi, the variable star Beta Persei (opens in new tab) was named Algol, meaning the Demon’s Head. All of these characters have been placed into the stars, with the majority of them grouped together in a section of sky in the Northern Hemisphere, while Cetus lurks further south. Falling in love at first sight with the beautiful damsel in distress below, Perseus saved her from her doom using the severed head of Medusa as a weapon, and took Andromeda as his bride. As luck would have it, the great hero Perseus was flying back over Ethiopia on his winged horse, Pegasus, after slaying the Gorgon Medusa. They chained the beautiful maiden to a rock to await her fate - hence why the constellation of Andromeda is often called "the Chained Maiden" in modern times. It has magnified the rippling rhythms of an entire city, an entire country, an entire world. Wanting to appease the gods and end Poseidon’s wrath, the king and queen were told that they must sacrifice their daughter to the sea monster. By the time attention comes back around to Lisa and Giorgi’s predicament and their story climaxes in a lovely moment of surprising revelation, What Do We See When We Look at the Sky has become something far larger than a tale of two people. To punish the queen for her arrogance, Poseidon sent floods and a sea monster, Cetus (opens in new tab)- though this constellation is often called the Whale in astronomy-to terrorize the coast of Ethiopia. This vanity angered the Nereids, who complained to the sea god Poseidon about the vain queen’s words. Cassiopeia was incredibly vain, and boasted of her daughter’s beauty, telling people she was lovelier than even the Nereids, sea nymphs whose beauty was renowned. They had a beautiful daughter, Andromeda (opens in new tab). In Greek mythology, Cepheus (opens in new tab) and Cassiopeia (opens in new tab) were the king and queen of ancient Ethiopia - now they are the King and Queen in our stars. ![]() Whether it’s oils, watercolor, or other traditional media, for the artist to have absolute control over their colors it’s crucial to have some kind of palette, plate, jar, or other off-canvas area to mix colors together. Off-canvas mixing has basically always been a core tool for artists everywhere when we think of the stereotypical artist we might imagine someone with a few brushes in one hand and a wooden palette in the other. With glazing can get you pretty far when it comes to defining planes and forms, scumbling is the best method to create texture and to break up big pasty flats in your painting. This allows you to create interesting and stylized screentone-like effects. Krita’s brush engines also allow you to use Texture. Like most painting programs, Krita allows you to pick a Brush Tips, which can be used to create a textured effect like that of scumbling. Scumbling is similar to glazing, except instead of having a semi-opaque layer, we use layers of textured or patterned paint. If you remove all paint from a smudge brush, you get a simple-yet-powerful smudge effect:ĭifferent smudge brushes have different effects, so be sure to try them all out! Scumbling ¶ Performance wise, it’s a bit more demanding and slower than the regular pixel brush. It’s a very powerful type of brush that gives a lovely painterly effect. Smudge mixing is done with the Color Smudge Brush Engine, a special brush engine that allows you to mix your current brush color with the color(s) under the brush. Make your edges as sharp or smooth as your subject matter and art style demands! Smudging ¶ Not only does this help you define the different planes and forms that are so crucial for creating a sense of depth and three-dimensionality, it also gives quite a nice, painterly effect!Ĭontinue with a lower opacity and flow to create even smoother gradients. Then, using a brush with low flow (~0.30), we can pick the resulting colors and lay down more layers. The multiply blending mode will darken and interact with each base color differently. Using a semi-transparent brush that’s set to multiply, we can add colored layers to suggest shadows and mid-tones. For example, glazing with the multiply blending mode to create nice shadows: ![]() Subtly different than opacity, flow is transparency per dab instead of stroke, and so it gives us softer strokes without giving up control.įurthermore, we can combine glazing with various blending modes to achieve different, interesting effects. We can mix even more easily with glazing when we set our brush’s flow to a lower setting. Depending on our brush’s opacity setting, each time we glaze one color over another we will get a color that is somewhere between those two colors, often leading to a nice mixture. ![]() Then, we pick the resultant color with the Ctrl + shortcut (this can be configured in the canvas input settings), and paint with that. We first lay down a semi-transparent layer on top of another color that we intend to mix with. This is one of the most fundamental and commonly used mixing techniques in digital painting. Likewise, in digital painting we can also use glazing to mix colors directly on our canvas. In traditional painting, glazing is overlaying many different semi-transparent layers to create on-canvas color mixtures. Bottom line: on-canvas mixing happens right on the canvas and is a great tool for artistic exploration and “happy accidents”. This takes a few forms, including layering semi-transparent color on top of another color, using texture to change how a color is perceived, or even in the interaction between two areas of wet paint in traditional media. On-canvas mixing techniques are ones where multiple colors are combined directly on the canvas as the artist paints. In both traditional and digital painting, mixing techniques can be divided into two major categories: let’s call them “on-canvas” and “off-canvas”. With a little bit of practice and know-how, and thanks to the variety of powerful tools in Krita, we can mimic all of these mixing techniques in digital painting. Traditional painters and illustrators often use techniques like glazing, scumbling, and hatching to mix colors directly on their canvas, on top of mixing colors together on a palette or even within the hairs of their brush. Much like physical media, there are many ways to mix colors together in Krita. And it can be changed by what’s called the Yarkovsky effect, a minor push on the asteroid, caused by sunlight.īoth are known effects. It took several more years of studying this asteroid to learn it would not strike Earth in 2029. Probability of collision reduced by precision You can imagine the media frenzy that resulted. That same month, Apophis was moved to the top of the list of potentially hazardous asteroids. And they found it had a 2.7% chance of hitting the Earth in April 2029, on Friday the 13th. By December 2004, they had enough data to make a rough calculation of the future orbit of the asteroid. ![]() This fact quickly caught the attention of astronomers worldwide. In the course of its orbit, Apophis can pass very close to the Earth. Its orbit defines Apophis as what astronomers call an Aten-class asteroid. As evening falls along the east coast of North America, the asteroid will be a telescopic object located in a part of the sky about 15 degrees north of the Pleiades. As the asteroid moves farther from the Earth and dims, it becomes visible in eastern South America. If you are in Australia, southern Asia, southern Europe, or Africa, you will have a front-row seat to see this asteroid when it is at its brightest. Not everyone will be able to see Apophis in 2029. This passage will also change the orbit of Apophis slightly. As the asteroid encounters Earth’s gravitational field in 2029, one result could be asteroid-quakes on Apophis. And it’s closer than many Earth-orbiting satellites. That’s in contrast to the moon’s average distance of about 250,000 miles (380,000 km). In 2029, Apophis should pass at a nominal distance of 19,662 miles (31,643 km) from the Earth’s surface. Calculations in recent years have proven the asteroid will safely glide past Earth in both 20.
